Notable Alumni


 
HU Shiqi, a martyr from Daxing, Hebei Province, graduated from BJTU in 1917 and was assigned to work at Jichang and Jidun Railway Bureau. To prevent Japanese from seizing the construction right of Jihui Railway, he proposed that China should build Jidun Railway independently. He led teams to survey, investigate and design railway construction, which caused Japan’s hatred. He was shot dead by Japanese in February, 1932.



TAN Yaozong
, a native of Taishan, Guangdong Province, graduated from Transportation Training Institute of the Ministry of Postal Service and Transmission. He invented telegraph of standard Chinese pronunciation which was simpler and more practicable and promoted it throughout the country. He initiated the notion of transportation with responsibilities and applied it to Chinese railway system. During the Anti-Japanese War, he was responsible for military transportation and later national transportation coordination, and he gained outstanding accomplishments in this field.



 
WU shaozeng, a native of Yutian County, Hebei Province, graduated from BJTU in 1920. Later he studied in United States and received master degree from University of Michigan and doctor degree from University of Pennsylvania. After returning to China, he taught at his Alma Mater. Later he was transferred to be deputy director in Railway Administration of Huning, Jinpu and Longhai. He passed away in an air crash in 1946.


 
YOU Yong, or You Tianyang, a native of Minhou, Fujian Province, graduated from BJTU. He led fights against warlord ZHANG Jingyao in 1919, joined Peking University Research Board for Marxism Theory in 1920 and led Longhai Railway Strike in 1921. Also in 1921, he was introduced by LI Dazhao and LUO Zhanglong to join Chinese Communist Party. In 1922, at the age of 24, he was persecuted to death by the government of the Northern Warlords.


 
ZHENG Zhenduo, born in 1898 in Changle, Fujian Province, graduated from Beijing Railway Management School (the predecessor of Northern Jiaotong University). In 1919, as a core member of the May 4th Movement, he was selected as representative of Beijing Student Association of Middle School and Above and became the first batch of Communist League Member. While studying at school, he loved literature, cofounded New Society Periodical Magazine with QU Qiubai and others, and published novel A Miserable Driver. In 1925, he cofounded Daily Justice with YE Shengtao and SHEN Yanbing. In 1930s, he worked as dean of Department of Literature in Shanghai Jinan University and advocated thoughts of New Culture.

YANG Rumei, a native of Ci County, Hebei Province, graduated from Higher Institute of Railway Management School (the predecessor of BJTU) in 1920. He was sent to United States as the first batch of students studying abroad in the summer of 1921, and received Bachelor and Master Degree in Economics in University of Michigan. He received Doctor Degree of Philosophy in 1926, and at the end of the same year, he returned to China and began to teach at BJTU. He is one of the four most famous accounting experts of our country.


 
ZHAO Chuanyun,a native of Changshu, Jiangsu Province, graduated at the top of his class from BJTU in 1923. In 1924, he received Master Degree in Economics from University of Illinois. In 1949, he went back to BJTU and worked as professor and dean. He worked in education field for 60 years and composed many books including Railway Management Theories.


 
XU Yanying, a native of Lai County, Anhui Province, graduated from BJTU in 1922 and received master degree from University of Illinois in 1924. After returning China, he worked successively in Ministry of Transport and Savings and Remittance Bureau. In 1949, he was transferred back to BJTU to work as professor and dean of Department of Economics.



XU Jing, a native of Yunmeng County, Hubei Province, a famous railway transportation expert, graduated at the top of his class from BJTU in 1927, and later studied in University of Illinois in United States. In 1934, he went back to BJTU to teach. He once published an commentary together with Professor SHEN Zouyan of Shanghai Jiaotong University criticizing certain regulations issued by then Ministry of Railway Administration, which won the reputation of “Professor SHEN in the south and professor XU in the north”.



 
SU Congzhou, a native of Xuzhou, Jiangsu Province, graduated from BJTU in 1923. He once worked as director of Sichuan-Yunnan Transportation Bureau, and after the founding of People’s Republic of China, he worked successively as deputy director of Culture and Education Bureau of Ministry of Railways, vice chairman and central committee member of Beijing Branch of the Revolutionary Committee Of The Chinese Kuomintang, vice-chairman of the People's Political Consultative Conference fifth and sixth Committee of Beijing, and member of CPPCC fifth and sixth National Committee.



 
JIN Shixuan, a famous railroad transportation expert born in Dongyang, Zhejiang Province, graduated at the top of his class from BJTU in 1923. He composed Railway Transportation Theory, which is the first book on railway transportation in China. Later he studied in the United States and received Doctor Degree in Economics from University of Pennsylvania. Then he went back to China and worked as deputy director of Zhejiang-Jiangxi Railway Bureau.


 
JIA Zhaoqian, born in 1915 in Yanshan County, Hebei Province, graduated in 1939 from BJTU with distinction. Later, he went to United States to study. After returning to China, He worked successively as commissioner of Road Administration Department of Ministry of Transport, expert of Technology Standards Committee of Ministry of Transport, and professor of Changsha Railway University.



 
LIU Zhicheng graduated from BJTU in 1940 and joined Chinese Communist Party in 1939. He once did underground works for the Party. After graduation, he was engaged in revolutionary work in liaison office of the Eighth Route Army in Chongqing and office of Chinese Communist Party in Shanghai. After the liberation of Shanghai, he worked in the field of economy and later became deputy director of Shanghai Import and Export Office.


 
YIN Zong’e, a native of Jiaohe, Hebei Province, graduated with distinction from BJTU in 1944 and worked as a professor here since 1949. He composed Accounting Principles and many other books.


 
XIA Keding, born in Tongxiang, Zhejiang Province in 1923, graduated with distinction from BJTU in 1945 and then studied in the United States. He worked as professor in College of Business Administration of University of California, Berkeley. Since 1979 he visited our University several times and held lectures here.



 
MO Ruoyu, a native of Wuxing, Zhejiang Province and now a Singaporean, graduated from Beijing Railroad Management College in 1948, received master degree in Wharton Business School of University of Pennsylvania in 1958, and then became an entrepreneur. Now, he is the CEO and general manager of Singapore Universal Furniture. He cares very much about the development of his Alma Mater. Since 1997, he set up the Scholarship of Wisdom and Prudence in Northern Jiaotong University.



 
WAN Yuanhua, a native of Jiangling County, Hubei Province, is a literary critic, professor and doctoral supervisor. He taught at Beijing Railroad Management College from 1946 to 1948. After the founding of People’s Republic of China, he worked as chief of Literary Division of Shanghai Literary and Art Work Committee, director of Publicity Department of CPC Shanghai Municipal Committee, member of the Fourth Council of Chinese Writers Association, and vice-chairman of Chinese Writers Association Shanghai Branch. In 1985, he began to enroll doctor candidates of History of Chinese Literary Critics. He has written many books including A Study of The Book of Literary Design.
