  • 1896
    The Nanyang Public School, predecessor of Jiaotong University, was founded.
  • 1909
    The School of Railway Management was founded.
  • 1910
    The School of Railway Management offered posts and telecommunications programs to boost the posts and telecommunications industry of China.
  • 1917
    The School of Railway Management was restructured into Beijing Railway Management School and Beijing Posts and Telecommunications School in line with requirements of posts and telecommunications as two different disciplines.
  • 1921
    The Shanghai Industrial Technical School, Tangshan Industrial Technical School, Beijing Railway Management School and Beijing Posts and Telecommunication School merged into Jiaotong University with three branch schools based in Beijing, Shanghai and Tangshan. Our university was named Jiaotong University Beijing School.
  • 1923
    The name Beijing Jiaotong University was decided.
  • 1928
    The three branch schools in Beijing, Tangshan and Shanghai reunited into Jiaotong University.
  • 1929
    The University adopted the name of Beiping Jiaotong Management School of Jiaotong University and scored great achievements until the outbreak of the War of Resistance against Japan.
  • 1938
    In times of the War of Resistance against Japan, Beiping Jiaotong Management School of Jiaotong University was moved to Xiangtan of Hunan Province and then to Pingyue (now Fuquan County) of Guizhou Province.
  • 1944
    It was moved to Bishan of Sichuan Province, where she combined with Tangshan Engineering College till the ending of the War of Resistance against Japan.
  • 1946
    The University was moved back to Beiping and her name was altered into National Beiping Railway Management College.
  • 1949
    Beiping Railway Management College, Tangshan Industrial College, and Huabei Jiaotong College merged together to establish China Jiaotong University, which had under it Beiping Management College and Tangshan Engineering College. The Department of Railway Telecommunication Management was also established then.
  • 1950
    China Jiaotong University changed its name into Northern Jiaotong University, to which was facilitated Beijing Railway College and Tangshan Engineering College. MAO Zedong, Chairman of the Central People’s Government, appointed Dr. MAO Yisheng, a famous expert in bridge engineering, as President of the University.
  • 1951
    Chairman MAO Zedong autographed the name of the University. The University established Railway Business Department.
  • 1952
    Headquarter of Northern Jiaotong University was removed. Beijing Railway College and Tangshan Railway College were affiliated to the Ministry of Railways.
  • 1953
    Harbin Railway College was incorporated with Beijing Railway College.
  • 1956
    Beijing Railway College established Railway Construction Department, Railway Mechanical Department, Electrification Engineering Department and Applied Sciences Department.
  • 1960
    Beijing Railway College was approved to be a key University of the country by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China.
  • 1970
    The name of Beijing Railway College was changed into Northern Jiaotong University.
  • 1981
    Northern Jiaotong University became one of the first group of universities authorized by the Central government to confer master and doctoral degrees and to appraise and appoint associate professors, professors and doctoral supervisors.
  • 1994
    Northern Jiaotong University was qualified for the first round of competition in its efforts to enter the 211 Project and became one of the universities supported by this project.
  • 2000
    Northern Jiaotong University united with Beijing Electric Engineering College and its administration was taken over by the Ministry of Education from the Ministry of Railways.
  • 2003
    The university resumed its name of Beijing Jiaotong University with the approval of the Ministry of Education.
  • 2004
    The Graduate School was established with the approval of the Ministry of Education.
  • 2008
    Harbin College of Beijing Jiaotong University, an independent college supported by both Beijing Jiaotong University and an industrial sponsor, was founded with the approval of the Ministry of Education.
  • 2012
    An agreement was signed among the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Railways and Beijing People’s Municipal government on the join administration and support of Beijing Jiaotong University.
  • 2015
    With the approval of the Ministry of Education, BJTU and St. Petersburg State Transport University, Russia jointly established an overseas educational institution: Russia-China Jiaotong Institute.
  • 2015
    Beijing Jiaotong University Weihai Campus was approved for construction by the Ministry of Education. The Campus started student recruitment and was officially put into use in September.
  • 2016
    With the approval of the Ministry of Education, BJTU and Lancaster University, U.K. jointly established Lancaster University College at Beijing Jiaotong University located at Weihai Campus, focusing on Chinese-foreign cooperation in running schools.
